Although Italy began the ballet tradition, it was the French that
cemented it. Incorporating some aspects of Italian ballet, French
ballet gained prominence in France and eventually international
influence. To this day, the brunt of ballet vocabulary originates
from French.
Ballet, especially classical ballet, puts great emphasis on the method
and execution of movement. A distintive feature of ballet is the outward
rotation of the thighs from the hip. The foundation of the dance consists
of five basic positions, all performed with the turnout.
Students are required to learn the names, meanings, and precise technique
of each movement they learn. Emphasis is put on building strength mostly
in the lower body, particulary the legs, and the core (also called your
center or stomach) as a strong core is necessary for many movements in ballet.
Ballet classes at In Step are offered to students ranging in age from
3 years to adult. Classes are organized by skill level of beginner to
advanced pointe.

Clogging is a traditional type of percussive folk dance which is associated
with a number of different regions across the world.Originally, it was not
always called "clogging", being known variously as flat-footing, foot-stomping,
buck dancing, jigging, or other local terms. What all these had in common
was emphasizing the downbeat of the music by enthusiastic footwork.
In the U.S., the Appalachian style of clogging, as well as many distinct
styles, have developed. Modern competitive clogging style incorporates
aspects of the English and Irish step dances, as well as American Appalachian
clogging, French-Canadian step dance, tap and more. The high-energy
style has opened the form to a wide audience, and the traditional styles
also continue to flourish, with hundreds of workshops and competitions
every year.
It is recommended that children do not begin clogging until age 5, where
the basic steps of clogging will be enphasized. Tap is also recommended
prior to clogging. By participating in clogging at In Step, you can become
a member of the studio's feature group, Fancy Double Youth Cloggers.
This group is frequently invited to perform at various venues, attends numerous workshops, and has won many awards through competitions.

Hip hop dance covers a wide range of styles, including dances that
have often been associated with hip hop culture, to those that are
merely performed to the music. These styles have grown in popularity
over the years, partly due to the rise in popularity of hip hop music.
Students can begin studying hip hop at the age of 5 and are placed
in one of four classes based on skill level. Even though hip hop
music may contain explicit lyrics, special measures are taken to
assure that all music is not only editted, but age appropiate as well.

Jazz dance has seen many evolutions throughout the years. Having
its origins in African American Dance, it was popularized by dances
such as the Charleston and Jitter-Bug, and later trasformed into many
various styles, such as those of Luigi and Bob Fosse. Jazz dance is
common in Musical Theatre and is a popular dance style choice of
danceline and teams.
To excel in jazz dance, the dancer must master ballet techniques.
In jazz dancing the movements are big and exaggerated and there
is usually an attitude the dancer conveys to the audience. The
attitude would depend on the dance.
At In Step, dancers can begin studying Jazz dance at the age of 5 and
are placed in one of four classes based on skill level and age. Ballet is
recommended both prior to and in coordiance with Jazz. Many
different forms and styles of Jazz dance are explored in these classes.

Modern dance is a dance form developed in the early 20th century.
In the early 1900s a few dancers in Europe started to rebel against the
rigid constraints of Classical Ballet. Shedding classical ballet technique,
costume and shoes these early modern dance pioneers practiced free dance.
In America dancers such as Isadora Duncan, Doris Humphrey and Martha
Graham developed their own styles of free dance and laid the foundations
of American modern dance with their choreography and teaching.
When one is learning the art of modern dance, one should put themselves
in the mindset of whatever their dance is expressing.
Dancers at In Step can begin studying Modern dance at the age of 12.

Tap dance was born in the United States during the 19th century, and
today is popular all around the world. The name comes from the tapping
sound made when the small metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch a
hard floor. This lively, rhythmic tapping makes the performer not just a
dancer, but also a percussive musician.
Common tap steps include the shuffle, flap, cramp roll, buffalo,
Maxie Ford, time steps, pullbacks, and wings. Tap dancing steps may be
learned and mastered by children and adults alike and are a good way to
express/learn rhythm, dance, and percussion.
Dancers at In Step can begin studying Tap at the age of 3. The
Fundamentals of Tap dancing are taught at a basic level and advance
through 4 offered classes.
